M + J in the City: Museum of the City of New York
One of the greatest things about New York City is the huge variety of amazing museums located a quick subway ride away. While throngs of tourists flood some of the bigger-named institutions, we love to visit and browse the incredible collections of some of the smaller museums the city has to offer. One of our favorites is the Museum of the City of New York, located near the top of Museum Mile, and idyllically situated right across from Central Park.
Visitors can browse collections specific to NYC, viewing curated exhibitions ranging from fashion to history. A current exhibition, Activist New York, tells the story of New York’s place in important historical movements that affected the nation, from women’s suffrage to historic preservation. As history buffs, we also love the online archives that let you access the museum’s fantastic collections from anywhere in the world. While browsing their photographic records, we came across this gem; a city barber shop in 1903, with all the barbers and assistants in crisp white jackets. What will you find hiding in the City Museum’s collections?
