Let Your Hat Do The Talking

Old blue eyes once said, “Cock your hat. Angles are attitudes.” Sinatra was an icon of effortless cool and timeless style, and he was certainly onto something with the notion of using the hat as a conscious tool of body language. A great hat can give a man the feeling of confidence to match their personal style, but can also help communicate your attitude to those around you.

  • Angle your hat forward to seem more mysterious and intimidating. The fedora or trilby are best for this look, as their crown shaping and brim make a better silhouette when pushed forward on the head.
  • If you want to appear open and friendly, wear the hat pushed back on your head.  This can be done with any hat, but we think the pork pie is best suited for a friendly, open appearance.  Its flatter top will also rest better than other styles when pushed back on the head.

Observing traditional hat etiquette also lends an air sophistication to any man. If you want to show you're not only dapper, but polite and considerate, then follow some simple acts to show your good form:

  • Remove your hat when entering someone's home, a restaurant, an elevator, or a house of worship(if deemed appropriate by their religious tradition).
  • Greet your friends and neighbors with a slight touch to your brim.
  • Remove your hat for the playing of a national anthem, regardless of the country. (You never know- you could be going to the Olympics or some other international event. These things come up!)
  • For some serious old-school style, lift your hat by the crown as a greeting to a female friend. It's said this time-honored hat habit comes from the middle ages, when knights would lift their visors as a sign of good intentions. Just like style and taste, chivalry is all in the details!
